JKA WF Honbu Spring Camp Report
Two of our senior members, Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Maria Hrabec
attended the JKA Spring training camp in Tokyo, Japan April 16th
– 19th 2009. The camp, which took place at the
Honbu dojo, had over 350 attendees from all over the world. Both
of our representatives were very impressed by the technical level and
instruction that they observed. The following is an account of
some of their thoughts and observations. The camp was a four day
camp, beginning on Thursday and ending on Sunday. Off the dojo
floor, the instructors were very friendly, though once training
commenced, they became very serious, expecting everyone to put forth
their strongest effort. Although the curriculum in the US and in
Japan was the same, the methods of teaching varied, as will the
technical subtleties.
Though no particular way is necessarily right or wrong, one should
study the differences and try to understand the reasons for them.
Kihon, kata, kumite, and kata application were all studied.
During kihon training, longer pauses were taken between counts to make
sure everyone was doing the technique properly. The kata training
stressed the changes that have been made in recent years, so that
attendees could report back to their respective countries what is to be
expected at tournaments and exams. Kumite training included the
Japanese instructors taking lines of practitioners, where they had to
fight one attendee after another. This is a new addition to the
camps and has been taking place for the past couple of years, and it
was an exciting way to see the instructors in action.
Other than training, Dan and instructor qualification exams took place,
as well as meetings to discuss the current political state of the
JKA. Our representatives were very pleased with their trip and
advise all of us to try and attend these events in the future.
This will provide for better communication between the headquarters as
well as for a closer relationship.
