Report from the JKA Atlanta Clinic in January

"The JKA Atlanta was honored to host sensei  Mikami for its first clinic & kyu test, as a member of the JKA/AF. “I’ve longed for this day for over 15 years!” Those were the first words spoken by Darryl Adams (JKA Atlanta- Chief Instructor) as he stood to introduce sensei  Mikami to the 40 plus karate-ka who participated in the two-hour clinic, which was both instructional and inspirational. As Mr. Mikami recounted memories of his training in Japan, standing in between the portraits of Mr. Funakoshi and Mr. Nakayama, those in attendance began to realize just how fortunate they were to have an opportunity to train with a man who represents such a pivotal aspect in the history  of Shotokan karate.  Beyond his first hand knowledge of the origin of the JKA instructor program, of which he was the first graduate, Mr. Mikami shared his thoughts about the trends in martial arts training that he has observed in his more than 50 years of training, one of the most appalling being the dwindling appreciation for the value of training kata and its probable demise as a competitive event in major karate competitions. Nonetheless, sensei Mikami was adamant, stating his belief that the benefits of traditional training methods would indeed transcend all others. To that end, Mr. Mikami  gave detailed explanations of the techniques as they were practiced throughout the clinic, pointing out some of the common mistakes often made by beginning students, and, challenging the dan ranks to always pay close attention to detail, whether instructing others or self training. At the conclusion of the clinic, sensei Mikami answered several questions from the participants and ended by expressing his gratitude for the participants being there.
